Along the way, the world building of the Avatar universe is expanded. Yee needs to explain about the current state of the Four Nations. That can be typical for the start of a series.

There are times when the pacing of The Rise of Kyoshi feels a bit slow. I for one love the anticipation and build up of the romantic relationships in novels and The Rise of Kyoshi does not disappoint! Cons One of the highlights of the novel is Kyoshi’s budding romantic relationship, which plays out in the context of her established bisexuality. The reader is rooting for multiple potential relationships, not knowing who will capture Kyoshi’s heart. The character’s actions always manage to serve the story while being thrilling in its own right. Sometimes intentionally and sometimes circumstantially. The companions and enemies that surround Kyoshi challenge her on physical, emotional, and spiritual levels. Kyoshi’s character development throughout the story really stands out. He takes an already established character and world, and he creates a story that perfectly satisfies fans while simultaneously hooking new readers.

This speaks to Yee’s ability at interpreting the television show’s maturity and charm. Love, humor, pain, and friendship are all felt as Kyoshi finds her footing in the Earth Kingdom. Emotions are felt in all their rawness and honesty through the characters thoughts and dialogue. Yee’s descriptions in The Rise of Kyoshi are impressively detailed without going overboard. Kyoshi’s journey takes many twists and turns as she masters the four elements and seeks revenge for the traumatic events inflicted upon her by Kuruk’s companions. She must now flee the incorrectly chosen Avatar’s household with her friend. After a series of tragic events, Kyoshi is revealed to be the true Avatar. The identity of the Avatar is thrown into doubt after Kyoshi performs a feat of Avatar level earth bending during a battle with enemy pirates.

Her salvation comes not when she is discovered as the Avatar, but when she is hired as a servant in the incorrectly chosen Avatar’s household. She grows up neglected, on the verge of starvation, and is an extremely timid bender. Meanwhile, Kyoshi was abandoned at the age of five. Avatar Kuruk’s companions are so desperate to identify a beacon of hope for the Four Nations and restore the honor of the Earth Kingdom that they choose the wrong child. During these years, while the Four Nations are without an Avatar, opportunities arise for outlaws to prey upon the weak. The former Avatar Kuruk dies at young age, and his companions struggle for years to find the next reincarnation. Yee’s The Rise of Kyoshi transports the reader to the Earth Kingdom several hundred years before the events of the television show ever come to pass.
